A Bit Of A Letdown

Oh dear, I got home from work today to find a letter waiting for me. It was from the owner of the little cottage in Dorset where we stay every first week in September. We won`t be able to stay there anymore because she has moved in and is working locally...sigh. She has however given us the option of staying at `Whitehaven` (see above). It is owned by a lovely lady who used to look after the cottage but after her husband died she moved to a smaller place in the nearby village. How family still stay there when they visit but I`m not sure whether I`d like to stay myself. It`s a large house and is more isolated than the cottages, and they are quiet enough as it is. I`ll have to ask Jim what he thinks when he gets home from work. I`m going to miss out little bolt-hole in the country, it was like a home from home as it would have been our tenth visit this year.

We originally stayed there because we wanted to take Hannah with us. She loved it there and throughly enjoyed bounding through the fields, sometimes coming across a rabbit that she could chase and never catch. Each year she enjoyed as much as the first until her final stay when she was terminally ill and only had a couple of weeks left. Despite her illness she still paddled along the edge of the sea wagging her tail and looking at us for assurance. It was a bittersweet time because we knew she would never come away with us again but still she seemed happy to be there, and that made our stay happy too.

Then of course Jake came with us, doing the same things as Hannah but in his own leisurely way. he`s far more laid back and his attitude to life is, `Oh yeh, I liked that....right, can I have a sleep now?` Hannah`s was " That was TERRIFIC! Can we do that again, well can we????"

Anyway, we are going to go back there somehow or another so if we don`t stay at Whitehaven we are going to have to find something else...soon.

I`ll say goodnight now and I`ll let you know what we decide.

  1. I'm sorry your holiday cottage is no longer available for you. It's sad when you had so many good memories there. I hope you find somewhere else nearby to make new memories. Jeannette xx New journal

  2. Ahhhh that's a shame. I know there are lots of those places available for holiday get-aways. Bob's California daughter & son in law have 2 places outside Phoenix, AZ that they rent out for a week(s) or even months. There's one couple in one of them now from the Czech Republic. The place you pictured looks lovely. I can see you up there on the balcony sunbathing in your bikini. Linda in Washington

  6. I enjoyed catching up on your journal. I'm so glad your family got home safe from their trip to Russia. I'm sorry you have to find a new place to vacation. Maybe it will be a blessing in disguise.

I hope winter settles in again. I'm hoping that for you and for So. California. It's been very warm here.

    Hugs, Kathy

  7. Since you have lost the use of your favorite vacation home, why not try the other one, at least once, and then decide if you want to go again or find another place? I agree with Kathy (above), it may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Try it and see.

  9. We do het used to staying at the same place Sandra I agree. The new one does look nice but as you say very isolated.I am very nervous of isolated places in todays world. There are some nice tranquil places of stay but maybe somewhere not quite as remote as this one looks.I do hope you find one and it proves to be as good as your old one.Take Care God Bless Kathxx

  10. That's such a shame, Sandra. I hope your new place will suit you. It's so hard to have to give a vacation spot up after you've grown accustomed to it. xx

  12. How sad you won't be able go back for the 10th time, but I'm sure wherever you stay you, Jim & Jake will make very nice new memories. Hope you find the perfect place.

  13. We go to the same cottage every year when we visit Norfolk and like you I would be upset if the owner did not let it any more. You come to think of the cottage as your own you know where everything is and notice if there is any changes. Hope you can find something else nearby that suits you Jim and Jake. Love Joan.

  16. That house looks lovely Sandra. Isolated yes but it's not as if you would be on your own. I'd give it a go,you don't HAVE to go again.

    Love, Angie, xx

  20. I clicked on the photo of the large isolated home and it is a wonderful looking landscape and the design of the home is great. It is very large. I hope you find something in your interest range and location. I read about your oven glass shattering and I know that Pyrex glass will do that because of heat stress. I put an new microwaveable glass pyrex bowl on a burner and when it cooled it shattered. I hope your spill on the stairs was not too bad and Jake is fine. I hope Roman's skin condition is treated and made manageable. It is 27F and I have been snowbound all week after a storm that started out sleet. Lots of major damage and long term power outage for a large population south of S. IL. Actually I missed the ice problem by just 50 miles. The worst storm I have ever seen in this surrounding area. It will be melting tommorrow and much more on Sunday. I will then be able to use my car/truck. mark
