A Saturday Catch up

It`s been an odd week. I`ve had news that three friends are very unwell with potentially serious conditions. To preserve their privacy I won`t go into details but it`s very worrying. I don`t see any of them on a day to day basis but I wish them all well and hope they all recover quickly.

I haven`t been feeling 100% myself if I`m honest. It`s most likely nothing more than a virus but this morning I awoke with a painful throat. Hopefully it will come to nothing as it usually does. Also I have had a small painless cyst on my bottom lip for a few years. When I first noticed it I had it checked by a doctor just to be on the safe side. I was told to forget it and so I have done until now. Yesterday evening it became very painful and swollen and I look as though I`ve been in a fight! I`ll see how it is on Monday and if it`s still as bad I`ll make an appointment to see the doctor.

Roman has his 4th birthday party on Saturday 18th. It`s not his birthday until the 28th but Kerry has decided to have it early before any of his friends go away on holiday. We are hoping for good weather because there are a lot of people coming and she only has a small house so we need the space in the garden for all the guests. In case of rain we have a gazebo to keep everyone dry.

Today Kerry went shopping for Roman`s school uniform and spent what amounted to a small fortune. Of course she had to buy everything with the school emblem from the official school shop which always makes it more expensive. On top of that there are still the new shoes, socks and plimsolls/sneakers to be bought. I told her that I will buy the coat and Jim will get the shoes at the end of the month. I still find it hard to believe that Roman is old enough for full-time school but he just can`t wait to go. For such a young child he is frighteningly independent and so unlike he was just a year ago. There was a time when he shied away from other children and now he makes friends wherever he goes.

Sophie has had a dreadful cold but is over it and back to her usual self. As Kerry said, " I know she`s feeling better because she`s crying again so that everyone knows she`s there!" Oh yes, that`s my Sophie...quiet and laid back is just not her way...lol! She is beautiful when she smiles though, it`s just that I don`t think smiling is her style at the moment.

I`ve noticed Blogger is very quiet and many of my old friends just don`t post as often as before, and I thought I was the only one. I don`t know if it is the AOL journals effect or just that real life is getting in the way of computer time. I know I`m in no position to talk as I know I don`t post much these days, but its just an observation. I won`t stop posting altogether but it`s a lot different to how it used to be. I don`t know if I`m the only one but at the moment I can`t change the font on my posting as the tool that you change it with has disappeared, so has the colour change too. I just wonder if Blogger know about it and are they doing anything about it?

I`m not busy at work now the planting season has passed but I`m happy to be able to spend some more time in my garden. The runner beans have provided us with enough beans for several meals already. I`ve had ripe blueberries and a couple of tasty tomatoes and I`m hopefully for lots and lots more. Since the heatwave has been replaced with cooler, more overcast weather it seems to be slowing everything down in the garden, even the weeds which I`m happy to say I`m on top of. At the moment we are planning the extension to our patio and the further alteration of the flower beds. I`ll never be happy with my garden as it is and constantly feel the need to change it. I suppose though that a garden is an ongoing thing which really is never finished whatever you do to it. I just hope I can stay healthy so I can work outside for as many years as possible.

Anyway, I`ll finish now as it`s time for my evening meal and despite feeling a bit under the weather my appetite is good as ever. Take care all of you and have a great weekend. :o)

  1. You must get that lip looked at Sandra as I know you will. Yes, school uniforms are so very expensive and wait until he starts, the schools want money for this money for that, Becky always has her hand in her pocket.

There is swine flu in Nathan's school and a few miles from us the first "healthy" patient died from it. All very worrying.

I hate to see journals the way they are. So many have left, gone to Facebook and Twitter instead. Tried Facebook, it is certainly not for me. Nothing could ever replace a journal.

I will carry on doing the odd posting. Mainly I think it was because many did not like the blogger system, the lack of alerts and just recently so many getting error messages. Nobody is in charge of blogger so nothing can be reported much. Not like the days when we had a journals editor. All very sad.

I would like to change my garden again, I planted too many trees when we first moved in. However, it is getting beyond us now and if we lose the trees we lose our privacy but I do wish I had not planted things so close together.

  2. Indeed school uniforms are expensive, however wait until he starts secondary school and the change the uniform after the first year!! My expletives should of been deleted when I found out. Now my daughter is in the upper 6th she is allowed to wear smart office wear so there is an amount of flexibility but not in price.

As for people writing in ther journals over the years I have noticed a trend for it to become quiet during the summer, I suppose people are making the most of the long warm evenings! Certainly in my case I have not been updating mine as often as I used to, being of sick I do not see much of life as I used to and there is only a certain amount you can say about the treatment.

  3. I hope you and Sophie are both feeling a lot better soon. It doesn't seem like Roman is old enough for school. Time is just flying past. Good luck on your patio and garden. Helen

  5. Nice to 'see you' here Sandra. Please get the problem lip looked at again.I'm not around so much, keep promising myself to do an Entry. Not the same on blogger, and I'm not a Fan of Facebook or Twitter.
We have been fence painting today, and now it's pouring with Rain, but cooler.

  6. Hello Sandra! I don't mind how much or how little you post I'll always try and read you!

You know, I just don't see what everyone dislikes so much about Blogger. Maybe something to do with the enforced exit from J/Land? I find it much easier to navigate around and I get alerted in 2 ways: by email or via my Blogger Dashboard. The key to getting alerts is to join the 'followers" list of blogs you want to read.

I used to think AOL went quiet in summer with people being away and so does Blogger but I find I have loads of friends on here so there's always somebody despite so many J/landers joining Facebook and Twitter.

Have to say though, I've been having trouble with fonts too and with uploading photos. Ive been using Mozilla Firefox rather than Internet Explorer, which makes access to other people's blogs easier.

Crikey! Grandbabe No. 1 is 4 yrs old? Where does the time go?

    Enjoy your Sunday,
    love, Angie, xx

  9. I'm sorry to hear about your friends' illnesses. And I hope you're feeling better. It's amazing to think that little Roman is off to school already. I keep thinking about getting more plants but then I think July is almost over and fall will be here soon. I have one area that has troubled me all spring & summer. Mysteriously it has been taken over by wild sweet peas. They are so invasive & I keep pulling them out & they come back even worse. They've choked out all the real flowers that were growing there. I don't know what to do about that situation. Again, I hope you're not getting a cold....Linda in Washington

  11. You are right it is quiet on here just now but you do an entry and get little response to it so you feel you are wasting you time. You take children into school very early in England you have to be 5 that year Jan-Dec. here it makes a big difference in ages in the class though . Have picked my first tomatoes last Friday just on the windowsill for a couple of days to soften a bit. Am pretty sure the plant was a variety of Achilea there are so many. Take care Love Joan

  12. Hello dear friend, It is so good to hear from you again. Don't worry about posting often. I don't & as you have observered, so many others are not posting often as well. Just don't stop posting all together. Sorry to hear you have friend who are unwell. I will send up a prayer for them.
We have been unbearably hot-in the 100s but it IS summer in West TX. LOL Thank goodness fo the pool. We had a Hawaiian luau birthday party last evening for our 6 yr old granddaughter, Mackenzie. It was a HUGE success and the only thing we forgot was girly drinks with umbrellas for the adults!! LOL A great time was had by all. I am overwhelmly exhausted. I shopped for about 4 hours the other day then helped w/all these party preps. I made a tiki hut cake. It turned out only OK, but Mackenzie loved it. We did have a casualty. Our 6 yr old maltipoo Jake jumped off my daughter's lap & bascially tore what is the same thing as the human knee ACL. Not much to be done for hime unless they perfomr a surgery that usually doesn't do much good for them. So he has to tough it out with anti-inflammatory & pain meds. Poor baby. He is such a big old sissy anyway. He is going to be a terrible patient. I hope the pain meds help him as he doesn't NOT want to move. Please say a little prayer for him.
Glad Sophie is better.I cannot believe Roman is ready for school!!
give all my love. Hugs, barb *queenb

  14. Hi Sandra, have you checked out the Wordpress blogging site? I think it is better than Blogspot.
    Hope your lip is better!

  15. Sorry it has taken me so long to get over here. I still post daily or might miss a day here and there. But....I am really bad about reading blogs. Our little community with the AOL group is just not as cohesive. It's just different. I am impressed that we have all managed to find each other though...a lot of us. And we at least know where everyone is.

I dont post very often as no-one seems to read my blog! I live such a boring life lol.
I have chillis nearly ready and my tumbling tomatos are coming on nicely. I hope to get some railway sleepers delivered this week and my husband is going to make me two raised beds. One for some veggies and the other will be plants and flowers as they are taking over the decking!
    Hope you feel better soon

Anyway, hope you are all feeling well and that you've sorted out your lip! Can believe that Roman is starting school so soon! Hope he's looking forward to it. I'd love to see some of Sophie's photos. She's probably huge by now. Look after yourself. Ciao. A.

  18. Hi Sandra,
I think everybody is noticing the same: the shift away from blogging to Facebook and Twitter. Guilty as charged lol. I won't give up blogging though.
    Get well soon,
